Dear Friends of Neighborhood Senior Services,
As the holidays approach, we are reminded of the importance of home. How many times have we hummed along to the great old song lyrics, “Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays”?
At Neighborhood Senior Services (NSS), we believe that there’s no place like home any day of the year, and we know that remaining at home becomes more difficult as we age. This fact became ever so clear to our founder, the late Mary Baker, who offered a helping hand to her aging North Side Ann Arbor neighbors 32 years ago. Mary and her family and friends offered emotional support and assistance with practical things like outdoor chores, home maintenance, and rides to the doctor so that her older neighbors could remain living safely and comfortably in their homes.
Since our grass roots beginning in 1975, NSS has broadened our array of programs and expanded our service area to all of Washtenaw County, but our mission remains the same:
Neighborhood Senior Services exists to provide support, services and advocacy for older adults who are living in their own homes, so that they may do so safely, comfortably and with dignity.
Our highest priority goes to older adults with the fewest resources. Seventy five percent of NSS’s 1,200 clients live on annual incomes of $12,000 or less. Eighty three percent are women living alone. And the need is growing. We know that in less than 25 years, the number of older adults in Washtenaw County will triple, with the fastest growing group being adults over 85 years of age.
Won’t you please give generously to help older adults in your neighborhood stay safe and comfortable in their own homes this holiday season, and every day of the year?
Thank you so much, and Happy Holidays to you all!
