What began in 1975 as an informal response to the needs of Mary Baker's elderly neighbors in the north side of Ann Arbor, has grown into the county-wide organization known as Neighborhood
Senior Services (NSS).
Mary recognized that many of her older neighbors were in need of assistance with the activities of
daily living. She founded Neighborhood Senior Services with the help of her family, friends,
and neighbors. With these volunteers she assisted families and professional caregivers by providing
services otherwise unavailable to older adults.
Working from her home, Mary and her Ann Arbor neighbors created a support system for the elderly,
incorporating as an independent 501(c)(3) in 1976. From this grassroots response to the needs of
friends and neighbors, grew an organization that remains attuned and responsive to the problems
and concerns of older adults.
